do u have any links or advice on how to learn to make gifs? yours are really cool
when you start out you think to yourself “there’s gotta be an easier way to do this it’s taking forever” but the simple fact is that doing something impractical and time consuming is how you discover your own shortcuts and get more skilled with the program you use. And then you wake up one day and realize you have a professional level of proficiency in a graphic design software from making shitposts and anime gifs over the years to impress strangers on the internet. It feels .
#and then those skills are rendered commercially meaningless because of procedural ai..#but no I don’t have any real advice#once you build the muscle memory for the program the time consumption goes down significantly

also, like, just for everyone's reference, that "ai effects on brain engagement with writing" paper is from the MIT media lab specifically, a bizarre department composed of a mix of different labs from different fields which ostensibly are meant to allow for unusual crossdisciplinary or otherwise out-of-the-box research, and in fact are mostly very self-consciously designed to a very specific vision of what "out of the box" means that hit a small set of very trendy research topics. often they do very hype-conscious slightly fluffy conceptual work about popular topics (AI, robotics, consciousness, human-tech interactions, etc) that get very widely promoted in order to encourage funding by the kind of individual philanthropist who's really into that kind of thing.
those labs do sometimes produce good research, but it's very conspicuous that they're not actually situated in a research department where they would be surrounded by their actual peers in the discipline and receive feedback and supervision by other experts. like, it's not that any given work from that department is definitely suspect in its methods or anything. it's just that, if your main interest was in doing good neuroscience, there is a whole MIT neuroscience department already, and the choice to instead be in the flashy self-promotion department and frame all your questions in the flashy self-promotion framing is. at least kind of notable.
#this isn't a reflection on the quality of the research procedures which i haven't delved into particularly.#but it may be informative about the choice of question and certain particularities of the framing.#box opener#like even when someone's doing good research it's like. why did you decide to make it maximally difficult to find any peers who#you could talk to about your work in neuroimaging.#as opposed to someone developing vr-enhanced opera.#it's just really obnoxious watching people use Trusting Scientists as a new blind heuristic when like.#probably this is a part of a larger at least somewhat meaningful research program but it is so so definitely also a stunt.

Funny how downloading someone's digital content without their consent is a super serious crime until corporations do it en mass.
#the same companies insisting piracy is a huge deal#are using procedural art programs that steal scores of images text and music#it was never about whether or not digital media was protected#it was just that we were never allowed to own it#even if we made it

once in a while i contemplate what was going to happen to evan, back in season 1 when he asked for the Procedure to Make Him Normal. because, like, we realized that that's a lie, right? we realized at the big reveal that there isn't anything that makes someone capable or incapable of magic; everyone on earth could do magic if they were aware of it and were taught how to do it. there wasn't a thing that could be taken out or a switch that could be flipped; everyone was magic all along, had been even before some british assholes built a secret society on it. evan was never going to stop being magic.
so, like, what was philtrum's plan. were they going to just wipe evan's memories and drop him back where he was before? would they try to erase all of evan's memories that involve magic, including all the scary demon shit that happened throughout his life? or would they just cut out his knowledge of gowpenny, and essentially rewind him to before he got that first owl? if he doesn't remember gowpenny, he's not gonna remember that he was supposed to have a procedure that fixed him anyway, so what does it matter?
i don't remember clearly, but i believe (?) the whole procedure thing was one of the ways philtrum was trying to get the whole pilot program declared a failure, so maybe wiping all their memories and sending them back without knowledge of gowpenny or magic or each other was always part of her plan. but even if they no longer remember what magic is, they will still have the potential of magic, and that could be an issue with evan, right? philtrum and co. don't know everything about evan's demon stuff, but she must've noticed from the beginning that something about evan isn't right. evan's familiar is his own shadow; in every conversation with him, evan has spoken of magic as something that he had a pre-existing relationship with (namely, a bad relationship where he is scared of magic because it has caused bad stuff to happen to him). for all the others, if gowpenny was removed from their lives, may never cast another spell again, but it's hard to be sure of that with evan; philtrum didn't know concrete details about the demons, but she also didn't know that sam managed to charm them into leaving. what happens if Bad Magic Shit happens to evan again, and something leads evan to remembering or finding out about gowpenny anyway? evan could be some kind of prophecied dark wizard, which probably isn't a foreign concept for a headmistress who runs a school where there is a whole house for kids who've been labeled evil; if they return him to america and he's left to his own devices, how can they be sure that he doesn't Cause Problems for wizard society later?
what i mean is. we already know philtrum's tried multiple times to get evan killed; we know she feels contempt for the pilot program and want to get rid of them and protect the status quo. and evan has no family to go back to; the only people who would care enough to miss him would have no way of knowing where he's gone and what's happened to him, and hopefully would not remember him once this whole ordeal was over.
she was probably going to kill him, right? like, why waste time performing complex magic brain surgery on this kid? she's got no issues with lying, manipulation, and child murder. if evan had ended up going to the nebulous Appointment, philtrum was probably going to straight up kill him, or at least try to. and for the first time in his life, the shadows and demons wouldn't be around to protect him.
#laughs awkwardly#dimension 20#misfits and magic spoilers#anyway just some fun thoughts to chew on. man philtrum's corpse was such a funny saga#EDIT: i feel like maybe this is worth adding. at the core of all this is#regardless of whether or not there actually exists such a Procedure. philtrum has been trying to kill this kid this whole time#and he is now agreeing to go with her on his own and let magic stuff be done to him. why WOULDN'T she kill him#he's finally isolated and heading into a situation with the understanding that none of his friends would hear from him again. so like.#without public pressure of the big debate that the pilot program represents. what value does evan being alive provide to philtrum?

Procedural Dungeon Generation
Alright~ After much work we have finally completed our dungeon generation algorithm. First, we generate the rooms, separate them using a separation steering algorithm.
Second, we generate a graph that represents connections between the various rooms
Third, we perform what is known as Delaunay Triangulation, in which we evaluate pairs of triangles and swap their shared edge if it fails a test boiled down to a simple matrix determinant evaluation Fourth, we construct a Graph of connectivity from the Delaunay triangulation
Fifth, we perform an A* pathfinding algorithm to connect points on the delauney triangulation through the neighborhood graph
Finally, if we didn't traverse through a room, we can remove it to simplify the dungeon into something a little less dense
There are some extra things we can do here and there, and bugs and edge cases to iron out here and there, but for now, we have a pretty neat little dungeon generator. The next step is to actually procedurally generate the rooms and then use the connectivity graphs to implement game logic and whatnot, but that we will save for another time.

this is probably yet another issue that boils down to SBs state but I think mimic would have felt 100% better if they focused on the layers of security it has. like, mimic is just a rusty ass robot and has somehow survived this long and people refuse to try and kill it and trap it instead but right now it just seems frustrating bc it's a frail old robot. but I think if they would actually focus on how like, mimic KNOWS how fragile and vulnerable it is by itself so it created all those layers of security in the pizzaplex and glamrocks and vanny and rab to protect itself but keep doing what it was doing. I think thatd be so much more interesting if they framed more plots as stripping away that security instead of just "nobody has killed this thing yet and all its victims refuse to kill it for seemingly no reason"
#also if they would play into the AI glitchtrap part of mimic more and not old ass endoskeleton route#bc in hw1 glitchtrap is mimic so mimics program was the one they told to recreate old showtime procedures#so mimic recreated mismatched fnaf game lore and stuff in hw like it was told to do#and when it escaped the game it was still trying to recreate the games by killing as an afton persona#like thats so interesting to me#but they arent playing into that and are just showing mimic as a physical robot who can talk as other people thats rlly old#and like glitchtrap is a completely seperate character#someone on youtube in a theory vid said that glitchtrap was like the vanny to its vanessa and i think thats cool#like vanny was removed from vanessa and now glitchtrap was removed from mimic and killed in hw2#pandas.txt#thoughts#discourse#i saw someone say that the reaskn nobody tries to kill mimic is bc someone tried to burn it before but it didnt work because#'fire only works on possessed robots'#but like i dont think thats true man like mimic is made of metal and is just an endoskeleton science wont stop working bc its not possessed#by a spirit

in a lost of post-canon fics ive seen, a lot of people like ryou bakura to follow in his fathers footsteps w egyptology and acheology and whatever else but in my opinion I think he would actually really enjoy social sciences, specifically, studying peoples brain and behaviour and what else. Sociology, (behavioral) Psychology, and Criminology.
I think it'd be interesting for him to think about why people behave the way they do, and what causes them to hurt others. How hurt people hurt people, and how people handle complex trauma.
#guy who is in the crim program studying a lot of trauma and system procedures#with electives in psych sociology and philosophy#sitting in class like “man i bet ryou bakura would have something to say about this”#“i don’t think the system is equipped to handle people with complex needs” I say. thinking about a certain thief.#ryou bakura#bakura ryou#yugioh#now do i think hed do anything with that kind of studies? no i think hed go work at the museum anyways. no one likes social sciences

I ran out of jokes, so, uh. I'm just gonna write programming thoughts here now and continue the bit when it comes up.
I'm a massive shill for procedural programming - I think breaking a program up into data types and things you do to those types makes the most sense - but there's one thing I do miss about OOP: interfaces and the specific flavor of polymorphism (and composition) they brought to the table.
I know polymorphism is largely a mark against OOP. But, really, the ability to switch data types out by just implementing another that uses the same interface? It's so nice and I miss it so much!
#yeah ik ik it'd bring a lot of problems#but just imagine#a contract saying “as long as you have X field of Y type#I'll take it and return you Z“.#It *reduces* coupling between data types and procedures! i want that so bad!!#programming#i-hate-state-machines

📟 Day 63 of Game Dev for 🫱Teleport Man🫲
WOOO MIDNIGHT DEVLOG!! Bringing it back to how it used to be. XD
Added textures and lights to my procedural generation. Starting to actually feel horror-y. Wonder if I should make the "mall" a level instead of the HUB world hmmmm. 🤔

i've got to remember that my job is simply not that serious bc i have like. 130 hours of sick time and i was on the phone with my doctor's surgery scheduler lady who was like so you're scheduled for a thursday when would you like to go back to work? and me still having Programming that's never gone away was like can i just take thursday and friday and go back monday? and she paused and was like well you /could/ since you have a desk job but like. you don't have to. i'll write the note for however many days you want. and now i'm like you know i /could/ use a few extra days of simply lying around my house watching movies and not existing. might be fun.
#this has been a useless text post you may now resume your normal programming#this is nothing serious btw i'm fine hence me being flippant about taking a couple extra days#to 'recover' from a very simple outpatient procedure lol

Alright! Delaunay triangulation is officially, properly implemented. Notable roadblocks: Some boolean logic was terminating early because I one-lined it improperly A random test case was running on update constantly messing up the triangulation, causing me to question my sanity as I desperately figured out why it was flipping things back and forth Swizzling and figuring out the order the elements had to go into the matrix. At the very least, they have to be ordered counterclock wise, and just for good measure I matched the order to this diagram (again, courtesy of wikipedia)
And finally, we no longer needed a test for convexity as the Delaunay process handles that case as well! meaning it was actively getting in the way of the algorithm and had to be removed! Super excited to move on from this nightmare

Bodies with atmospheres using scatterance, absorption, and emission in my space sim/game. Solid surfaces are drawn first, then the volumetric atmospheres. Also shown is a multicoloured galaxy (from the inside) using the same thing with its glowing dust, with extinction (scatterance and absorption's combined dimming effect) also applied to the stars which are additively blended in. Their transmittances (the remaining luminance after extinction occurs) are calculated in a compute shader. The galaxy's sampling function could be made a lot more realistic (though I did give it spiral arms!), and some dark nebulae would be good to really showcase the fact that I actually added realistic volumetrics.
